Core Instances for Testing: A Case Study

چکیده
Data generation for computational testing of optimization algorithms is a key topic in experimental algorithmics. Recently, concern has arisen that many published computational experiments are inadequate with respect to the way test instances are generated. In this paper we suggest a new research direction that might be useful to cope with the possible limitations of data generation. The basic idea is to select a finite set of instances which ‘represent’ the whole set of instances. We propose a measure of the representativeness of an instance, which we call ε-representativeness: for a minimization problem, an instance xε is ε-representative of another instance x if a (1+ε)-approximate solution to x can be obtained by solving xε. Focusing on a strongly NP-hard single machine scheduling problem, we show how to map the infinite set of all instances into a finite set of ε-representative core instances. We propose to use this finite set of ε-representative core instances to test heuristics.

Evaluating the Application of Reinforcement Correction Factor for Concrete Core Testing
This study investigates the reinforcement correction factor of concrete core in more detail to prepare appropriate outlines for interpretation of results. This investigation aims to minimize uncertainties involved to carry out the more realistic condition assessment of suspect buildings before taking up retrofitting/strengthening measures. For this purpose, an extensive experimental program inc...
متن کاملEvaluation of the Effect of Sandblasting (120 μm) on Shear Bond Strength between Ceramic Veneer and Zirconia Core
Background and Aim: Due to the importance of the bond strength between zirconia core (ZC) and porcelain veneer (PV) as well as the paradox about the functionality of sandblasting on the solidity between those layers, this research aimed to evaluate the effect of sandblasting on the shear bond strength (SBS) between ZC and PV. Materials and Methods: After preparing 20 zirconia discs (7 mm &time...
متن کاملA committee machine approach for predicting permeability from well log data: a case study from a heterogeneous carbonate reservoir, Balal oil Field, Persian Gulf
Permeability prediction problem has been examined using several methods such as empirical formulas, regression analysis and intelligent systems especially neural networks and fuzzy logic. This study proposes an improved and novel model for predicting permeability from conventional well log data. The methodology is integration of empirical formulas, multiple regression and neuro-fuzzy in a commi...
متن کاملOn the Average-Case Complexity of Property Testing
Motivated by a study of Zimand (22nd CCC, 2007), we consider the average-case complexity of property testing (focusing, for clarity, on testing properties of Boolean strings). We make two observations: 1. In the context of average-case analysis with respect to the uniform distribution (on all strings of a fixed length), property testing is trivial. Specifically, either the yes-instances (i.e., ...
